Abstract: The article discusses manufacturing developments in China in 2008. Sweatshops and other export-oriented factories are shutting down in the Guangdong province, as higher-technology products and production methods become important for maintaining profits. Topics for discussion in the World Economic Forum in Tianjin, China, include the question of China's ability to compete with export-factories in Vietnam and India.
