New targets for drug development in asthma.

The article presents an overview of the need for the development of drugs, including inhaled p38 MAPK inhibitors, antioxidants and biological agents which target the interleukin-13 pathway, which could be used to treat asthma. A discussion of a need for increased knowledge of the inflammatory mechanisms within human airways which is needed before effective asthma drugs can be developed is presented. The prevalence of asthma across the globe and current treatment strategies that are used to treat asthma are discussed. INSET: Search strategy and selection criteria.
