Abstract

The article examines the interaction of representation and experience in relationships between body and identity in Latin American history. Through analyzing some discourses about the body, it explains the links between intimate and private activities whose function is to embody and express the social division of symbolic work and its ties to social representations of the body, social orders and their reproduction. This practical-symbolical activity is a fundamental tool in the techniques for governing life: It shows the mechanisms used for training governable subjects and reflects the conditions of colonial modernity as a broad context of biopower in Latin America.
