Abstract

The article discusses the treatment of epilepsy in resource-poor parts of the world, particularly in Kenya and Cameroon. Traditional healers in Kenya refer to epilepsy as "kifafa," ascribing it to visits by the hungry spirits of ancestors and treating the condition on that basis, and presenting a challenge to doctors attempting to import Western medicine. The article also discusses a successful intervention based on nurse-led intervention in Cameroon and lessons that can be learned from it.
