Abstract

The article discusses benchmarks for evaluating the performance of a computer system. Benchmarks tend not to be useful over long periods of time, owing to several reasons. In the absence of authoritative guidelines, benchmark creation and selection has often involved a large measure of subjectivity. The author cites approvingly a paper in the current issue by the DaCapo research group that seeks to address this shortcoming.
