Abstract

The article discusses the history of the city of Glasgow, Scotland which was presented at the Summer Meeting of the Royal Archaeological Institute in 1986. Many of the areas surrounding the city are rich in remains of prehistoric, particularly Iron Age and the Antonine Wall. The gradual expansion of the city from the Industrial Revolution to the present century led to the destruction of prehistoric monuments. Crannogs are a distinctive feature of the Iron Age settlement pattern of the Glasgow region. The city formed an important strategic point during the Roman period. Excavations on one of the wall forts at Bearsden have showed the remains of a bath-house.
