Abstract

The article reports that Turkey's constitutional court refused to ban the ruling AK party, a moderate Islamic political party, on the grounds it had violated the country's secular constitution, allowing Prime Minister Recip Tayyip Erdogan to remain in office. Secular powers, including the armed forces, are said to recognize attempts to replace the government by extralegal means would harm Turkey's economy and its efforts to join the European Union.
