Abstract

The article reports on the results of a study on the prevalence of obesity in China and its implications for the country's work force and economic growth. According to the study, more than 25% of adults in China are overweight or obese and such number is expected to double over the next 20 years. It notes that obesity-related costs will possibly lead not only to drastic increases in direct medical costs, but also to indirect costs such as decreased worker productivity and absenteeism.
