The article discusses a method used by University of Colorado graduate student Mark Siemens for studying phonon dispersion in a crystal. His approach involves measuring the diffraction of soft x rays from a laser-heated grating of nickel lines grown on a sapphire substrate, and was reported at a conference on lasers and electro-optics held in May, 2008 in San Jose, California.
