Abstract

Growing annual forage legumes represents one of the most quality solutions for constant lack of plant proteins in animal husbandry. Feed peas (Pisum sativum L.), vetches (Vicia sp.) and field bean (Vicia faba L.) have both winter and spring types, can be grown alone or in mixtures with small grains and are used in the form of green forage, hay, meal, green manure, straw, grain, silage and haylage. Vetches have the largest content of crude proteins in dry matter of both forage, ranging from 20,96 % in common vetch and 21,75 % in Hungarian vetch, and grain, with 31,46 % in common vetch. Apart from the fact that there are feed pea cultivars with about 28 % of crude proteins in grain, one of the advantages of growing feed pea is a rather low level of antinutritional factors in its grain, implicating its utilization in animal feeding directly after the harvest and without heat treatments.
