Abstract

The metabolic syndrome (MS) is considered as an association of health problems that can appear simultaneously or sequentially in each patient. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of the MS through the specified definition of the updated ATP III (ATP IIIa) and from the International Diabetes Federation of (IDF). This is a descriptive and transversal study including 184 patients (141 women and 43 men), age between 30 and 90 years old. Abdominal circumference and arterial blood pressure were measured and plasma glicemia, tryglicerides and high-density lipoprotein (HDL_c) were assayed. The results show a prevalence of MS of 59.7% in the studied population, which became higher when the IDF criteria (71,1%) was applied and also when estimated with the ATP IIIa criteria (67.4%). Abdominal obesity was the risk factor of major prevalence for both genders according to the above mentioned criteria. In conclusion, including obesity within the diagnostic citeria for MS, the cut off definition for each area allows a better identification of people with MS pathology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
