Abstract

The article analyzes the social and political situation of the Roma ethnic group in Eastern Europe, focusing on issues such as discrimination and ethnic violence in the decades which followed the collapse of Communist rule. Examples are drawn from the history of the Czech Republic, Kosovo, Bulgaria and Romania. Instances of forced sterilization of Roma women in the Czech Republic are described. Ethnic violence involving Muslim Roma in Kosovo is discussed. The history of Roma enslavement in Wallachia and Moldavia, which lasted into the nineteenth century, is also noted.
