Abstract

The article discusses tobacco as a major cause of premature death and disease in the world. According to the World Health Organization, about 5 million deaths per year are attributed to tobacco utilization. The results of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey conducted in Sri Lanka reportedly reveal that the number of students between 13 to 15 years old who smoke has decreased from 4.0% in 1999 to 1.2% in 2007. It is also mentioned that further reduction in the use of tobacco is targeted with the implementation of new tobacco-control measures.
