Abstract

The article reports that the researchers in Australia have discovered that the placoderms have been copulating and giving birth to live young for at least 380 million years. According to paleontologist John Long at Museum Victoria, the team has uncovered the world's oldest pregnant mother based on the discovery of embryos in fossils of these ancient armoured, jawed fish. The fossils are from the Gogo Formation, which is renowned for its remarkably well-preserved fish from the Devonian period. Furthermore, the researchers have identified a single embryo in a new Gogo fish genus and three embryos in a previously discovered specimen.
