Abstract

The article recalls events that shaped the American Chemical Society (ACS) in the U.S. in 1908. There was a tension between ACS members who were industrial chemists and those working in academe and government laboratories over access to abstracts of chemical literature published by European chemical societies. This tension has led to the creation of "Chemical Abstracts" in 1907. Industry members also complained of the lack of adequate representation in society governance bodies.
