Abstract

The article reports that a group of archaeologists broke ground at the site of the Stonehenge in England with the aim of pinpointing the date the bluestone pillars were first dragged to its current site some 4, 500 years ago. The project is sponsored by the National Geograhic as part of their studies on nearby Neolithic sites and is led by Geoffrey Wainwright and Timothy Darvill. The team plans to analyze short-lived organic materials such as twigs or grains with mass spectroscopy in the hopes of establishing the arrival date of the stones to within a couple of decades. The diggers hope to shed light into their theory that the stones, which were valued for their healing powers, were dragged 250 kilometers from the Preseli Hills in Wales.
