Abstract

The author discusses the use of negative advertisements in political campaigns. The author comments that negative campaigns inform voters about political candidates and discusses a campaign launched against former U.S. president Thomas Jefferson. The author suggests negative campaigning does not affect voter turnout and notes the use of negative advertisements by 2008 U.S. presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
