Abstract

If ''The Hills'' is an indictment of 20-something women behaving as if they were not yet old enough for bat mitzvahs, ''The Paper,'' a new reality series following it on Monday nights on MTV, is a different kind of exercise in ageism. It plays into stereotypes of overscheduled teenagers who run around with goals of world domination, who believe that an advanced-placement class is license to act as though they were 42. It's ''Election'' all over again. Set at what we are told is an award-wining newspaper, The Circuit, at Cypress Bay High School in Florida, ''The Paper'' revolves around the ambitions of an embattled staff of students, led by an editor in chief whose arrogance would surely alienate even a horde of mosquitoes. To say that Amanda is the editor is not much of a spoiler since she gets the job pretty quickly. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
