Abstract

Stress among university faculty has received considerable treatment in research literature in the past decade in higher education, but very little study has been undertaken from a comparative perspective. This paper reports the results of a comparative study in measuring stress among university faculty in China and Japan using a questionnaire survey. It analyzes the relationship between stress and health in different age groups of the faculty and the differences in the nature and structure of the stress between China and Japan. The research suggests that stress of Chinese and Japanese university faculty can be described as ``social-transformation stress'' and ``direction-conflict stress'', respectively.
