Abstract

The aim of this study is to integrate the main contributions in the study of human motivation, especially those most commonly used to explain work-related behaviour, but using a different classification criterion --individual self-expression as a key strength that activates, drives and maintains individual behaviour. This led us to group the theories into three categories on the basis of the specific way of individual self-expression underlying each theoretical approach: 1) theoretical approaches that emphasise the hedonistic character of work, where the individual is supposed to self-express through the pleasure resulting from work outcomes; 2) theoretical approaches that emphasise the individual self-regulation capacity at work, in order to achieve results that allow him or her to display his or her competence and expertise, and finally, 3) theoretical approaches that emphasise an authentic self-expression beyond work, being oneself and understanding work as it is without blocking the expression of the own identity.
