Abstract

The article discusses the Guild of Handicraft established by architect Charles Robert Ashbee in 1888 as part of the British Arts and Crafts Movement. The rise in utopian thought and socialist movements during the latter part of the 19th century is examined. The article discusses Ashbee's goal of connecting art, labour, and livelihood as well as his philosophies concerning the relationship between people, technology, and production.
