Metabolic syndrome in patients with MTHFR variant allele taking atypicals.

The article reports on a study which found higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance in schizophrenic patients with memethylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) 677 T allele who are taking atypical antipsychotics. The study examines the relationship between two genetic variants of MTHFR and metabolic sysndrome in patients with schizophrenia. It was observed that reduced MTHFR can result in inadequate folate metabolism and increased homocysteine. INSET: Folate, homocysteine and the C677T polymorphism.
