Abstract

The article discusses the history of studies of the human brain. The author states that the first appearance of the word "brain" is on an Egyptian manuscript dating from around 1600 BC. The papyrus is the earliest known work on trauma medicine and describes head injuries. Galen, a second-century Greek physician, studied animal brains and concluded the brain interacted with the sense organs in the head. The brain's role in explaining evolution is also discussed.
