Abstract

The article discusses the restricted production, sale and use of plastic bags in China. The restriction which was issued in a circular by the State Council General Office cited that plastic bags are the main cause of "white pollution." Specifically banned from production and distribution are bags that are thinner than 0.025 millimeters. Furthermore, free plastic bags that are handed out in retail shops and supermarkets will be banned effective June 1, 2008. The report also notes that Chinese consumers use more than 3 billion plastic bags per day.
