Abstract

The author comments on U.S. teenagers' habit of inserting the word "like" into their sentences in seemingly random spots. He notes that the habit is becoming more prevalent among Great Britain's further education (FE) students, and he ponders the reasons for it. He attempts to determine the meaning of the word when used in this way and concludes that it has not meaning but is rather a cross between a verbal hesitation and a uniquely youthful speech pattern.
