Abstract

In Turkey, highways have the biggest share in passenger and freight transport among the all transportation sectors. Rate of highway usage above 95% in passenger transport and above 92% in freight transport. Because of such intensive use of highways problems are encountered frequently. Statistical analysis reveal that 47% of mortal and injured traffic accidents occurs in-cities and 37% of mortal and injured traffic accidents in inter-cities take place at intersections. In European countries, 27% of traffic accidents on highway and 10% of mortal accidents occur at intersections on average [1]. It is known that there are some intersections in Turkey that makes drivers hard to perceive due to their deficiency in design and operation and the fact that they have different standards [2]. The main expectation of the intersection users is the intersection designs of which capacity and safety paremeters are balanced, operation principles are met and which have suitable technical infrastructure. One of the most important practices on this subject is the modern roundabouts which decreases traffic accidents significantly. Since they have different special design and traffic control properties they are defined as modern roundabouts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
