Abstract

The article discusses on an article by David R. Bellhouse published within "Historia Mathematica" in its May 2007 issue. The article by Bellhouse discusses on the work of Philip Stanhope, the second earl of Stanhope, on probability theory and his correspondence with Bishop Berkeley's criticism on Isaac Newton's calculus. Bellhouse writes that Stanhope was strongly influenced by Abraham de Moivre's work on a method of calculating the probability of events in play and by Pierre Rémond's essay. Bellhouse adds that one of Stanhope's contribution to mathematics was his work on determining the probability of a run of at least r sucesses in n trials which was posed by de Moivre. Stanhope also worked on the duration of play in the gambler's ruin problem.
