Abstract
- The article reports that U.S. government regulators of the financial services industry have begun discussions on possible action to shore up the bond insurance companies MBIA and Ambac. The two firms have guaranteed over $1 trillion of bonds, and may not be able to repay investors if the borrowers default on them, creating a financial crisis. Officials met with representatives of major banks to discuss a possible bailout. News of the meeting led to a dramatic rise in stock prices.
