Abstract

The article focuses on the positive impact a January 2008 interest rate cut by Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, had on the ability of U.S. banks, including Wachovia, to repair their balance sheets and balance their earnings. A discussion of a decrease in investor interest in the stock share of the banks which has resulted from the interest rate cut is presented.
