Abstract

The article reports that presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama and some of their supporters made charges on race- and gender-related issues, creating fears their rivalry would be divisive for the Democratic party. Clinton charged that Obama had distorted her previous remarks on Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., which his campaign denied. African American businessman Robert Johnson, a Clinton supporter, made thinly veiled allusions to Obama's admitted youthful drug use.
