The article details the ways that two buildings, the Elaine Kaufman Cultural Center, redesigned by architect Robert A. M. Stern, and the Eldridge Street Synagogue, redesigned by Walter Sedovic and Jill H. Gotthelf, have been reinvented to keep pace with a changing city. Stern utilized colors and luxury materials to make the Kaufman Center look more like a concert hall. Sedovic and Gotthelf added color and brightness to transform the synagogue.
