Abstract

Complex traffic system seems to be simulated successfully by cellular automaton (CA) models. Various models are developed to understand single-lane traffic, multilane traffic, lane-changing behavior and network traffic situations based on the basic CA rules proposed by Nagel et al. In this paper, a multi-class user traffic flow CA model is proposed to investigate the influence of driving behavior in traffic flow. Slow down possibility and maximal speed are two main variables, which determine driving behavior. Simulation scenario shows that the diversity of driving behavior will induce unstable traffic flow even chaos phenomena. Traffic controlling and management strategies are also discussed in this study. According to the results, optimal strategies may be developed and maximize traffic flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
