Abstract

The article focuses on the functional imaging study suggesting that basal ganglia act as filter in the brain which is inversely correlated with unnecessary storage before stimulus presentation. It is emphasized that efficiency variations in filtering of relevant from irrelevant information could contribute to individual differences in working memory. The study suggests that important cognitive differences between individuals may stem from interaction of basal ganglia and prefrontal cortex (PFC).
