Abstract

A new caridean shrimp belonging to the genus Eualus Thallwitz, 1891 (Decapoda, Caridea, Hippolytidae) is described on the basis of specimens from the south-eastern Australian continental shelf. Eualus pectiniformis sp. nov. can be distinguished from its congeners in having a combination of: a short rostrum bearing three dorsal teeth and either none, or a single ventral tooth, a rounded pterygostomial angle, epipods on the maxillipeds as well as on the anterior three pereopods, merus of third to fourth pereopods of males possessing a row of comb-like spines on the distoventral margin, and the dactyli of the ambulatory legs armed with 5 spines on the posterior margin next to the apical spine. A rare hippolytid species, Lysmata morelandi (Yaldwyn, 1971) is also recorded for the first time in Australian waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
