Abstract

The article reports on U.S. and foreign distillers who are producing and marketing the alcoholic beverage absinthe. Absinthe's sale was banned by the U.S. and almost all other countries in the early 20th century due to reports it was a hallucinogen which could cause mental illness and suicidal behavior. That idea has been discredited by subsequent research, but absinthe makers still face a more stringent U.S. regulatory process than the makers of other alcoholic beverages.
