Abstract
- The article focuses on the division- and addition-based models of rhythm in a computer-assisted composition system. Illustrations of rhythms generated by purely addition-based and purely division-based means, both of which are capable of generating a variety of rhythmic surfaces, is presented. It states that a transcription of the addition-based rhythm associates a simple notational unit with the unit pulse, while a transcription of the division-based rhythm taxes notational resources slightly more. The author considers how three rhythm-generating processes can engage the addition- and division-based aspects of conventional music notation and the associated strategies that are accessible to experienced performers.
