Abstract

The purpose of this article is to study vocative discourse uses in Spanish. It is divided into four sections: 1. Vocative as latin case and what do we understand as vocative nowadays; 2. Approach to politeness focusing, mainly, on what have been labelled as FFAs (face flattering acts) and FTAs (face threatening acts); 3. Study of the different vocative discourse uses; 4. Final word. We consider that vocatives can be used in discourse so as to: 1) imply politeness, that can be positive, if they accompany FFAs; or negative, if they accompany FTAs; 2) point out an speaker attitude of reflection (autorreflexive vocative); and 3) implicate the hearer into the speaker point of view (implicative vocative).
