Abstract

An encyclopedia entry for the term "music industry" is presented. It refers to the full range of economic practises needed to provide performances for audiences and to produce commodities that embody music or that enable music to be created. Particular focus is given to the core sectors of the industry identified in the 1980s, along with media practises and industries that have a mutually dependent relationship with one or more of the sectors. There are four stages in the history of the industry, according to Belgian musicologist Herman Sabbe.
