Abstract

This paper will explore the concept of media framing from an intercultural perspective that considers the impact of global media on the emphasis of news about developing countries in media of developing countries. The paper will specifically analyze the content of local elite newspapers in Malaysia in search of their coverage of news of two Muslim countries, and will compare that coverage to the coverage of the same news in western media as represented by prominent news agencies. The two incidents are the 1999 Egyptair crash over New York and the Darfur crisis in Western Sudan. The issue is vitally important when the current negative atmosphere of relations between the Muslim world and the west is taken into account. The paper hopes to underline the sustained impact of western media on developing world's media coverage of the third world issues, despite the continued debates on the issue since the 70s. The paper will therefore, attempt to underline the necessity of more potent regional media cooperation institutions to override the impact of global western media dominance. ..PAT.-Conference Proceeding [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
