Calcineurin/NFAT signaling in the β-cell: from diabetes to new therapeutics.

The article discusses calcineurin and Nuclear Factor of Activated T-cells (NFAT) signaling in pancreatic β-cell, in relation to diabetes treatment. Calcineurin activates insulin expression in response to a Ca2+ stimulus. Studies indicate that the NFATc and TORC protein families mediate calcineurin-dependent insulin transcription. The calcineurin/NFAT signaling pathway is important in pancreatic β-cell function and growth.
