Abstract

The article analyzes the failure of nationalist leadership in the United Nations (UN)-led Cyprus talks of March 2003 in Hague, the Netherlands and the Cyprus referendum of April 2004 perceived as historical opportunities for resolving the Cyprus conflict. The trends that offer significant milestone for achieving a final political settlement of the issue include inter-ethnic citizen peace building initiatives in the country. The manner in which nationalism understands democracy is also discussed.
