Abstract

The article focuses on how new states of the former Soviet Union, namely Estonia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine, define their identity politics and national security interests. The states opposed the presence of Russian armed forces and strategic bases in their territories following the collapse of the Union in 1991. The self/other dimension of identity politics played a major role in decisions about relations with the Russian Federation. Estonia wanted the withdrawal of the troops while the other two empathized with Russia.
