Abstract

Performativity has gained prominence in International Political Economy over the last years with the work of Michael Callon and Donald MacKenzie. This paper takes up this debate to investigate the political dimension of currency crises. By investigating ways in which risk is being performed in contemporary global finance, this paper seeks to investigate the ways in which risk is employed in socially charged and thus politically decisive contexts. Thus, by showing risk as a particular understanding or type of reasoning, this paper attempts to denaturalise risk and show its productive capacities. By establishing links to actual debates on private authority and 'knowledge production as practice', this paper seeks to show how core concepts of international political economy - knowledge, authority and representation - can be interrogated as performances of risk creation.
