Abstract
- This essay focuses on the music of the female folk duo Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, also known as the Indigo Girls. According to the author, characteristics of the misfit southern U.S. identity are represented in the music of the Indigo Girls. The author believes their songs are able to both identify with and confront various aspects of southern culture. The author also discusses the way in which the band promotes political, religious, and social activism through personalized songs.
