Abstract

The article reports that the world's child mortality rates for 2006 have fallen below 10 million for the first time since records began in 1960. The U.N. children's fund UNICEF reports that in 1960, an average 184 children died for every thousand born: it was 72 in 2006. UNICEF attributes the drop in infant mortality to antimalarial bed nets, vitamin A supplements, measles vaccination and an increase in breast-feeding, as well as lowered fertility rates.
