Abstract

The article discusses workforce diversity in academic libraries. The authors suggest that shortages of minority librarians and librarians in general have not changed since a paper on the subject in 2002. They suggest diversity in libraries should focus on serving diverse communities instead of meeting demographic statistics. They suggest the creation of a recruiting and public awareness campaign and the formation of a research agenda by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) to develop best practices for recruitment, assessment goals, and collection of accurate library data. They suggest employee retention strategies including compensation, professional development, and proper management.
