The article evaluates media reaction to baseball player Barry Bonds hitting his 756th career home run on August 7, 2007 to break the record held by Hank Aaron. It is found to be mixed. Some sports commentators, most notably Bob Costas of NBC, derided Bonds because of the charges he used performance-enhancing drugs, including steroids and human growth hormone. Others, including George Vecsey of the "New York Times" noted pitchers of Bonds' era may have done the same.
