Abstract: The article traces the origin of a unified Europe. The political role of the Catholic Church during the 18th and 19th centuries is discussed. This paper also examines the role of key figures in the European political history, such as Conrad Adenauer, Alcide de Gasperi, Robert Schuman, Jean Monnet and Charles de Gaulle. The establishment of European Community in the 1950s is also discussed.
