Abstract
- The article discusses the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on U.S. and Canadian food safety regulation, with particular focus on how each nation dealt with the emergence of indigenous cases of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), the so-called mad-cow disease. The article also looks at how BSE affected cross-border trade and the conflicts between free trade and national concerns about protecting domestic beef and cattle industries.
