Abstract

The article presents an inquiry of a microbiologist regarding the origin of species diversity. She mentions about the estimates of the total number of bacteria in the biosphere and the major goal of microbiology. The author also traces the first inkling of the huge diversity of the microbial world, which starts from the use of ribosomal-ribonucleic acid (RNA) typing in the late 1980s. Furthermore, she cites several studies that examine the microbial content of soils, sediments and hypersaline environments.
